Marginal Utility Gallery, 7 April – 14 May 2017

Reproductions of artworks, as stand-ins for the objects they depict, provide personal access to an artwork that is otherwise unavailable. They do so, however, at the expense of the material presence of the object.

I begin with these reproductions and attempt to reverse this loss by remaking artworks in their original materials:

1: Documentation photographs of ancient sculptures were transferred to blocks of Carrara marble, which were then carved traditionally with a hammer and chisel according to the information provided by the photograph.

2: Reproductions of seventeenth century chalk drawings were converted into lithographic plates, with which hand-ground natural minerals such as sanguine, hematite, and black chalk were arranged upon a linen rag paper.
